EDI (Electrodeionization) is combined with reverse osmosis and other purification devices to remove ions from water. Ion exchange resin in EDI module can be divided into two parts one part is working resin and the other part is polishing resin, and the boundary betweenthe two is working front. The working resin is responsible for removing most of the ions,while the polishing resin is responsible for removing ions that are more difficult to remove,such as weak electrolytes. The resistivity of ultrapure water produced by EDI systems can be as high as 15-18. 25 MQ-cm. EDI can be operated either continuously or intermittently.
EDl Operational Principle
EDI module is composed of several concentrated water chamber and pure water chamber combined units. Pure Water Chamber-The working interlayer filled with mixed resin between anionand cation exchange membrane to make pure water is called pure water chamber.Concentrated Water Chamber- -The connection between two pure water chamber sconsists of anionand cation exchange membranes, and the working interlayer for collecting concentrated water iscalled concentrated water chamber.Electrode Plate--The electrified guide plate used to generate electric field duringthe operation of themembrane block is called electrode plate. Usually divided into positive and negative electrodes,located at both ends of the module.EDI works as shown in the figure. In EDI module, a certain number of EDI units are separated by grids to form concentrated water chamber and pure water chamber. And cathode/anode electrodesare arranged at both ends of the membrane. Under the impetus of direct current, the anion andcation in the water flow passing through the pure water chamber respectively migrate to theconcentrated water chamber through the anion and cation exchange membrane and areremoved in the pure water chamber.
